be cured of it at one of our great urban medical institutions.
Still, I have vowed never to visit Lyme country again. If I want
to hike, I will climb stairs by repeatedly transferring between
the F and C trains at West Fourth Street. If my dog wants to chase
deer and shuttle their ticks onto me, he can disperse the rats
from our building's garbage area.
As
for the beach, I'm happy with the fire hydrant's cool spray
that veils my block of Seventh Street, sending teenage girls
shrieking in delight as lithe boys with ever-deepening voices
taunt them with buckets of water. I will choose Tompkins Square
Park over any Catskill, Peekskill, Adirondack or even a Hampton,
because as much as they say it's a jungle in this city, I'm
here to tell you it is a jungle out there, where the M.T.A.
stops and nature begins.
